MIAMI - The FIU women's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday night when they dropped a 3-0 decision to host South Alabama in the quarterfinal round of the 2005 Aeropostale Sun Belt Conference Soccer Tournament.
FIU (4-8-4) entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed; however, their opening contest was against one of the hottest teams in the conference - the No. 3 seed Jaguars (11-4-1), who had won their last six games.
The Jaguars got up early on the Golden Panthers as Tiffanie Stewart setup Tanya Allegretti for a goal in the 11th minute. Second Team All-Conference midfielder Rebecca Kahn extended the margin to 2-0 when she scored in the 25th minute mark to put the Jaguars up 2-0. In the second half, First Team All-Conference midfielder Kelly Tarrant knocked in USA's third goal off an assist from Allegretti.
In the loss, the Golden Panthers were out-shot 12-11; however, FIU did hold a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Janet Liguori closed out her career with a team-high three shots, including two on goal. South Alabama goalkeeper Kelsie Langford made seven saves in the shutout win. FIU goalkeepers Laura Snell and Madeline Gannon each played 45 minutes with Snell making two saves and allowing two goals and Gannon allowing a goal and making a save.
USA extends it winning streak to seven games and now advances to face No. 2 seed Middle Tennessee in Thursday night's semifinals. The Blue Raiders are coming off of a 1-0 double overtime win against Troy.
