Women's Soccer Wins First CUSA Match of the Season Over Delaware

Panthers score two in the first half, handing the Blue Hens their first loss of the season

NEWARK, Del. – Women's Soccer delivers Delaware (7-1-2, 0-1 CUSA) its first loss of the season as they take down the Blue Hens, 2-1 in the opening match of Conference USA-play on Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers (4-2-3, 1-0 CUSA) got just five shots off in the contest, but chose their chances well, ending with three shots on goal and a 60% shot on goal percentage.

FIU opened the scoring at the 16:48 mark when senior Chinatsu Kaio delivered a pass into the box, which graduate student Jayden Boelter headed past the Blue Hens' goalkeeper to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. It was Boelter's second goal in as many games, while Kaio recorded her first assist of the season, the first of two in the match.

The Panthers extended their lead late in the first half, as Kaio delivered another perfectly placed pass, this time finding junior Montelene Dymond, who finished the play to make it 2-0 in the 43rd minute. It marked Dymond's team-leading sixth goal of the season, tying her for second in Conference USA.

The Blue Hens did not back down, cutting the Panther lead to 2-1 early out of the halftime break with a score of their own at the 53:24 mark.

Delaware made a valiant comeback effort, getting off 17 shots and five shots on goal in the contest, but could not mount a draw in their first-ever Conference-USA contest. Panther goalkeeper Valery Restrepo ended the day with four saves, her fifth game of the season with four or more saves.

This is the second time this season that FIU has handed a team its first loss of the season, previously beating formerly undefeated UCF, 2-1.
