FIU Loses to Local Rival FAU, 1-0

MIAMI ? On Sunday night, the FIU women's soccer team dropped a close 1-0 decision to local rival FAU at University Park.

With the win, FAU raises its record to 5-3 and the Golden Panthers fall to 2-2-3. FAU goalkeepers Megan Coyne and Jessica Badders each saw 45 minutes of action in the shutout. The Owls held FIU to only seven shots. FAU's Ashley Mannarino had a match-high three shots.

After a foul on FIU, in the 33rd minute, the Owls' Susana Lehtinen knocked in a free kick from about 18 yards out that went past the outstretched arms of FIU goalkeeper Laura Snell. The goal by Lehtinen raises her team-leading total to six on the season.

An opportunity for an equalizer came for FIU in the 50th minute when a Janet Liguori shot was blocked by a collapsing FAU defense. FAU nearly added to its lead in the 70th minute, when Mannarino had a shot that hit the cross bar.

Up next for the Golden Panthers is a contest against UCF in Orlando on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
