Men's Soccer Falls to No. 17 Kentucky in Double Overtime

Lexington, Ky. - Florida International and Kentucky appeared headed for a draw for the second-straight year, and yet Riley O'Neill struck two minutes into the second overtime to give the Wildcats a 2-1 victory over the Golden Panthers in Conference USA men's soccer action Saturday night at the UK Soccer Complex in Lexington, Ky.

Sophomore Oli Birgisson (Akureyi, Iceland) leveled the match in the 35th minute for FIU (6-7-2, 2-4 C-USA) after receiving a header from senior David Hope (North Tyneside, England) on the left side of goal and firing an eight-yard shot past the keeper to the far post.  The goal was Birgisson's first of his career.

Kentucky (10-4-2, 3-2-1 C-USA) took the lead in the 17th minute when Michael D'Agostino dribbled down the left side and ripped a shot from outside the corner of the penalty area that found the side netting inside the far post.

The game remained tied at 1-1 through regulation and the first 10-minute overtime.  In the 102nd minute of the match, however, O'Neill headed home a left-side cross from Nathan Li at the back post to give the Wildcats the win.  It was O'Neill's conference-leading 13th goal of the season, and fifth game-winner.

Sophomre Kyle Thomas (Jensen Beach, Fla.) made a game-high five saves for the Golden Panthers, while Kentucky held a 19-8 edge in shots for the match, including a 15-4 advantage during the second half and overtime.  The Wildcats also had a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.

Tonight's match marked the second time FIU lost to a ranked opponent on an early goal to start the second overtime.  The Golden Panthers dropped a 3-2 double-overtime decision to No. 1 SMU in the teams' Conference USA opener.  Last season in Miami, FIU and Kentucky battled to a 1-1 draw.

The Golden Panthers are back on the road for a midweek C-USA matchup against UCF, Wednesday at 7 p.m.
