ORLANDO - Cam Jordan scored the lone goal of the match as UCF defeated Florida International, 1-0, in Conference USA men's soccer action Wednesday evening in Orlando, Fla.
Jordan scored in the 31st minute off an assist from goalkeeper Brian Pope as FIU keeper Kyle Thomas (Jensen Beach, Fla.) got a piece of the shot and yet could not prevent the ball from bouncing back and into the net.
The loss was the second-straight for the Golden Panthers, who fall to 6-8-2 on the year and 2-5 in C-USA. The Golden Knights improved to 4-8-2 and 2-3-2 in conference play. The win moves UCF past FIU in the standings. The Golden Panthers were tied for sixth with Memphis coming into the day, while the Golden Knights were in eighth. Tonight's loss, coupled with Memphis' 3-0 win over Marshall, means FIU is now in eighth place and two points ahead of Marshall for the eighth and final spot in the C-USA tournament. FIU will host UAB in its final match of the regular season Saturday at 7 p.m.
Senior David Hope (North Tyneside, England) nearly gave the Golden Panthers the lead in the 17th minute when his shot hit the right post. UCF's Chris Andaur headed a cross over the cross bar in the 88th minute that would have given the home side a two-goal lead.
Pope made a game-high four saves for the Golden Knights while Thomas made two for FIU. The Golden Panthers held a 10-9 edge in shots and a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks for the match.
