Fast Start at Louisiana-Monroe Leads Women?s Soccer to First Sun Belt Win

Monroe, La. ? Florida International scored two goals in the first 13 minutes of the contest, and then held on for a 2-1 victory over Louisiana-Monroe in Sun Belt Conference women's soccer Friday afternoon in Monroe, La.

 

The victory snaps a four-game losing streak for the Golden Panthers, who improve to 3-8 on the season and 1-4 in the Sun Belt.  The Warhawks fall to 4-9-1 and 0-5 in league play.

 

FIU took the lead in the second minute when freshman Camilla Durrant (Loughborough, England) took advantage of a mistake in the back and scored an unassisted tally.  The goal was the first of the year for the forward, who was playing in just her second match of the season.

 

Freshman Michelle Casadevall (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) made it 2-0 in the 13th minute following a corner kick, with her third strike of the season.  Sophomore Sadia Altidore (Boca Raton, Fla.) was credited with her first assist as a Golden Panthers on the goal.

 

ULM pulled one goal back just before halftime when Britnie Markham scored off an assist from Kelly Lanter in the 40th minute.

 

Junior Madeline Gannon (Ft. Myers, Fla.) picked up the win in goal for FIU and made five saves.  Mallory George made a game-high six saves for the Warhawks, who held a slight 18-15 advantage in shots for the match.  The Golden Panthers edged ULM, 6-5, in corner kicks.

 

FIU concludes its road trip Sunday with a conference match at Louisiana-Lafayette at 2 p.m.
