Tulsa, Okla. - Eighth-seeded Florida International was eliminated from the Conference USA Men's Soccer Championships following a 6-0 defeat at the hands of No. 2 and top-seeded SMU Wednesday afternoon at the University of Tulsa's Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium in Tulsa, Okla.Â
The Golden Panthers finish their season with a record of 6-10-2 while the Mustangs improve to 16-1-3.Â
Today's match did not follow the teams' regular-season matchup, in which then-No. 1 SMU needed a late equalizer and a double-overtime strike to defeat a nine-man FIU team, 3-2, in Miami.Â
After the teams went scoreless through the first 20 minutes, the Mustangs scored three goals inside of 15 minutes to take command of the match.Â
C-USA Player of the Year Bruno Guarda opened the scoring in the 21st minute after putting home a rebound off a Jay Needham shot. SMU's second also came off a rebound when Paulo da Silva scored following an Adrian Chevannes attempt in the 30th minute.Â
Needham made it a 3-0 game going into halftime after scoring off a corner kick in the 35th minute.Â
The match remained 3-0 for much of the second half until the Mustangs closed the match out with three goals in the final 15 minutes. Manuel Mariel scored in the 75th and 89th minutes, while Jordan Mann found the back of the net in the 81st minute.Â
Senior goalkeeper Shawn Crowe (Aurora, Colo.) made a career-high 13 saves in the loss, while senior forward David Hope (North Tyneside, England) led both teams with five shots for the match.Â
SMU, which outshot the Golden Panthers 34-11 and had a 9-3 edge in corner kicks, advances to face either South Carolina or UAB in the semifinals on Friday.
