MIAMI – FIU men's soccer's
Alfonso Gilleard-Soriano and
Santi Possu were named American Conference Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Gilleard-Soriano earns his first career weekly defensive honor after playing a key role on the backline in FIU's 2-1 ranked victory over No. 20 NC State on Thursday, Aug. 27. The American Preseason All-Conference selection played all 90 minutes at left back in the victory, helping limit the Wolfpack to just one goal, which came via a penalty kick.
The junior has appeared in all three matches this season, making two starts. He ranks second on the team in shots on goal (2) and has recorded three shots overall.
Possu played the hero Thursday, netting the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute to secure FIU's ranked victory over NC State at home. The graduate student leads the Panthers with two goals and four points through three matches, while playing 235 minutes. He also leads the team in shots (4) and shots on goal (3).
