Women's Soccer Falls In OT

Senior Madeline Gannon (Ft. Myers, Fla.) had possibly her best performance of the season as she tied a season-high with 10 saves, but the FIU offense could not get on the board as the Golden Panthers (2-9-3; 0-6-2) fell to the Jaguars of South Alabama (8-5-3; 3-3-2) 1-0 in overtime Sunday afternoon in Mobile.

FIU had six shots on goal including three by Claudia Cardenas (Visalia, Calif.) and two by Marina Pappas (Lancaster, Pa.), but USA goalkeeper Kelsie Langford was there to make the stop every time, as the Golden Panthers were shutout.

Maria Gualdron (Miami, Fla.) had a terrific scoring opportunity when she got behind the Jaguars defense and fired on goal, but her shot would bounce off the post, keeping the match scoreless.

After battling over 90 minutes with neither team being able to find the back of the net, it only took a little over two overtime minutes for the Jaguars to put away FIU. In the 93rd minute, Sam Slover took a corner kick for USA and Carly Williams headed it in to give South Alabama their third conference win and in the process keep FIU winless in the Sun Belt.

"It's tough playing three games in five days, especially playing with only 14 players," said FIU head coach Thomas Chestnutt. "The girls certainly wanted it, it just didn't happen for us."

With the loss, the chances of making the conference tournament are looking dim for FIU, but Chestnutt still has hope for his squad. "We have to regroup now. The chance of making the tournament, albeit slim, is still there; so we have to keep working."

The Golden Panthers return home on Friday, Oct. 26 as they host Arkansas State at 7 p.m.
