FIU's women's soccer team picked up their second win of the season when they upended the Hatters of Stetson 2-1 Sunday afternoon at University Park.
Â
Freshman Claudia Cardenas (Visalia, Cali.) got FIU off on the right foot when she netted shot from just outside the penalty area for the first goal of her collegiate career, putting FIU on top 1-0 in the 17th minute.
Â
Stetson had a golden opportunity to equalize when Emily Ware took a pass in the middle of the penalty area with no defenders marking her, but her shot sailed high over the crossbar.
Â
In the 58th minute, FIU had a chance to double their lead when Cardenas took a pass from Maria Gualdron (Miami, Fla.) and got behind the Hatters' defense, only to be denied by Andrea Garavaglia.
Â
A defensive lapse by FIU gave Stetson another great scoring opportunity, but Kia Rigsby (Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) and Michelle Casadevall (Miami, Fla.) made a pair of stellar defensive plays to end the Hatters threat.
Â
The Hatters would get another chance to equalize in the 82nd minute, and this time would cash in as Natalie Simon found the back of the net to tie the score at one.
Â
FIU would come right back and almost take the lead when Samantha Girard (Davie, Fla.) took advantage of a defensive error and took a wide open shot that sailed wide right.
Â
However, the score wouldn't remain tied for much longer as Claudia Cardenas took a pass from Michelle Casadevall and chipped the ball over the Hatters keeper for the winning score, her second of the match.
