Men's Soccer Falls Short Against Memphis

After falling behind 2-0, the FIU men's soccer team's offense came alive late but could only tally one goal as Memphis beat FIU 2-1 Sunday afternoon in University Park.

In the 13th minute, the Tigers took advantage of a lapse by the FIU defense to take a 1-0 lead. An FIU defender lost control of the ball, allowing Parker Duncan to blast a shot into the back of the net for the early lead.

Despite out-shooting Memphis 8-4 in the first half and having several scoring opportunities, FIU went into the break down 1-0.

The Tigers doubled their lead in the 61st minute when Duncan again took an open shot and didn't miss. After Ryan Ruble took a long shot that FIU keeper Jesse Fullerton saved but couldn't control. Duncan took control of the rebound and fired it in for the 2-0 advantage.

FIU cut the lead to one when they got a goal from an unlikely source. Senior defender Phill Fisher received a free kick off the foot of Juan Guerra and headed in for his first goal as a Golden Panther.

The Golden Panthers kept the pressure on for the remainder of the match, outshooting Memphis 16-9 on the day, but couldn't score again. The 2-1 defeat drops FIU to 2-7-2 (1-2-0 C-USA), while the win puts Memphis' record at 4-9-0 (2-2-0 C-USA). The Golden Panthers return to action on Wednesday October 15 at 7 p.m. as they travel to Huntington W. Va. to take on Marshall.
