QUEENS, N.Y. – FIU men's soccer fell 1-0 to St. John's Sunday evening at Belson Stadium.
Marking the 30th anniversary of their 1996 National Championship appearance, both teams battled to a scoreless first half, with the Panthers (2-2-1) holding a 5-3 advantage in shots heading into the break.
Early in the second half, St. John's broke the deadlock after a foul in the box by
Alfonso Gilleard-Soriano led to a penalty kick, which the Red Storm converted to take a 1-0 advantage in the 59th minute.
FIU continued to battle throughout the remainder of the contest but ultimately fell short in the non-conference tilt. The Panthers finished with a 10-7 advantage in shots, with four Panthers,
Jad Benjelloun,
Sergio Perello,
Martin Piedeleu and
Santi Possu recording two shots apiece.
Finn Bauens, and Gilleard-Soriano each played the full 90 minutes for the Panthers.
In goal,
Nigel Van Haveren recorded three saves, matching a season high.
