The FIU men's soccer
team dropped a 3-2 decision to the previously winless Thundering Herd of
Marshall, Wednesday night in Huntington W. Va. The Golden Panthers were aggressive all night, but
were called for 14 offsides, thwarting multiple potential scoring chances.
After falling behind in
the 12th minute and staying behind 1-0 through the first half, FIU
equalized in the second half when Steven Jair Cabas found the back of
the net for the first time this season. The sophomore striker received the ball
inside the box off a free kick from Christian Caporaletti and drilled it
into the right side of the net to bring the score to 1-1.
After allowing Marshall to re-take the
lead in the 71st minute, the Golden Panthers tied the game right
back up in the 73rd on a converted penalty kick by Conference USA
Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Juan Guerra. It was Guerra's
sixth goal of the season.
With just 1:39 left in
regulation, Marshall's
Sammy Boateng took a shot that FIU keeper Jesse Fullerton turned away.
However, the freshman keeper couldn't control the ball and Michael Bolt
hammered in the rebound for the match-winner.
The win snaps a 12-match
winless streak for Marshall that began in last
year's Conference USA Championship Tournament semifinals when FIU beat Marshall 3-2 in overtime.
The loss put's FIU's record at 2-8-2 and 1-3 against conference foes.
