FIU Shuts Out Troy on Senior Day

FIU 1, Troy 0

FIU's women's soccer team won their third game in a row, a 1-0 decision over Troy on Senior Day, Sunday afternoon at University Park.

The Golden Panthers outshot the Trojans, 23-1, including 11-0 on goal. FIU also dominated with 12 corner kicks compared to just one for Troy. It was a hard-fought game by both sides that included four yellow cards and a red card on FIU Head Coach Thomas Chestnutt.

"It was great to send our seniors out with a win in their final home game," said Chestnutt. "To control the game the way we did against a very organized team I think really shows our quality." Senior Maria Gualdron (Miami, Fla.) agreed, "I was pretty emotional today but the girls played hard and the win was all I could ask for in my last game here.

The game's lone goal was scored in the 33rd minute by FIU's Kassandra Sorzano (Miami, Fla.). Claudia Cardenas (Visalia, Calif.) controlled the ball just outside the box for the Golden Panthers and played a perfect through ball down the middle to Sorzano who would finish from ten yards out.

"We've started to realize that playing hard in practice really pays off in the game," said senior Kia Rigsby (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago). "We get put in the exact same situations and practice and if we can get it done in practice, it makes the game that much easier."

The Golden Panthers will travel to Arkansas-Little Rock next Friday at 8 p.m. before heading to Arkansas State for a 2 p.m. game Sunday.
