The FIU men's
soccer team fell 2-0 to the Gamecocks of South Carolina in their C-USA opener
Saturday night in Columbia, S.C. After
keeping USC's offense at bay during the first half, FIU (1-6-2; 0-1-0 C0USA)
allowed a goal in the 48th minute and wouldn't be able to recover as
they fell for the sixth time this season.
Despite being
out-shot 8-4 in the opening stanza, the Golden Panthers defense and freshman
keeper Jesse Fullerton were able to
hold off the attack, sending the match into the break in scoreless tie.
Fullerton recorded three saves in the first half and three in the second.
South Carolina
got on the board at the 47:20 mark when C-USA points leader Sam Arthur found
the back of the net for the 10th time this year. The Gamecocks made
the score 2-0 with 66:20 on the clock on a goal by sophomore Blake
Brettschneider.
Juan Guerra led all Golden Panthers with five shots,
three of them on goal, but was turned away every time by USC keeper Jimmy
Maurer who finished with five saves.
FIU will look
for their second win of the season this Wednesday as they head up the road to
Orlando to face the Knights of Central Florida at 7 p.m.
