After taking the lead in the second half, the FIU men's soccer team held off a relentless attack by FAU late in the match to down the Owls 1-0 Monday night at University Park.
The first real scoring opportunity of the night came courtesy of FIU's Juan Guerra who made a run on the right side but his shot was turned away by FAU keeper Phillip Lamarre.
The Owls had a great scoring chance of their own in the 24th minute when Shire Standnes made a run of his own down the right sideline. Shire took a low shot towards the lower left corner of the net but the shot bounced harmlessly off the post, keeping the match scoreless.
Neither team would mount another serious scoring threat as the match went into the halftime break scoreless.
After a relatively quiet first 17 minutes of the second half, the duo of Juan Guerra and Steven Jair Cabas went to work as they hooked up to give FIU a 1-0 lead in the 63rd minute. After FIU took control of the ball near midfield, Guerra sent a through ball to Cabas who made a run down the middle of the field and beat the FAU keeper, scoring into the bottom left corner.
Starting in the 73rd minute, the Owls would unleash a frantic attack in an effort to tie the score. The attack was started by Darnell King who got past the FIU defense on the right side before cutting inside and taking from just outside the box a shot with his left foot. However his attempt sailed way high. Just six minutes later King again threatened the score, this time by settling a pass and taking a long arching shot that went just over the reach of FIU keeper Jesse Fullerton but hit the crossbar and was cleared away.
In the 81st minute Evan Kluge almost tied the score on a header off a corner but Fullerton made a spectacular diving stop to the shot. Two minutes later Darnell King again had an opportunity to score when he unleashed a laser of a shot from a few yards outside the box. However the shot was right at Fullerton who bobbled the ball but eventually secured it.
King's last shot would be FAU's final gasp as the Golden Panther defense tightened up and FIU held on for the 1-0 win. With the win FIU improves to 4-10-2 while the loss drops FAU to 4-11-1.
The Golden Panthers final regular season match will be on Friday as they host SMU at 7 p.m. in a pivotal C-USA match.
