Giovannoni and Maree Garner All-America Recognition
MIAMI, Fla. (www.fiusports.com) ? FIU swimmers Sara Giovannoni (Modena, Italy) and Trudi Maree (Bloemfontein, South Africa) were named CollegeSwimming.com Women's All-America Honorable Mentions, it was announced today.
Giovannoni, a junior, broke her own school records in the 200 individual medley (2:04.90) and 100 breaststroke (1:04.07) at the Sun Belt Swimming and Diving Championships in February. She also recorded an NCAA “B” time of 2:14.80 in the 200 breaststroke to finish second in the conference.
Maree, a freshman who joined the team in January, set a school record nearly every time she raced during the season, beginning with record marks in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle in her first race on January 26. Maree ended the season at the Sun Belt Championships with third-place finishes in the 50 (23.44) and 100 (52.17), both school records.
Following the season, Maree, already a member of the 2007 South African National Team and gold medalist in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay at last year's All-Africa Games, competed in the 100-meter freestyle, as well as the 50- and 100-meter butterfly at the 2008 Telkom South African Aquatic Championships. She finished second in the 50-meter (26.16), eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:05.65), fourth in the 50 fly (28.63) and third in the 100 free (58.63).
Overman Places Second In Age Group At Miami Open Mile
MIAMI, Fla. (www.fiusports.com) ? FIU senior Lindsey Overman wrapped up her collegiate career at the Sun Belt Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in February, but has not stopped swimming.
FIU's school record-holder in the 400 individual medley relay finished 21st overall and third in the female overall category at the 2008 One Mile Swim Miami at the Miami Marine Stadium on April 12.
Overman finished the race in 22:49.
Swimmers Visit Baptist Children's Hospital
MIAMI, Fla. (www.fiusports.com) ? It's out of the pool and into the community for the FIU women's swimming and diving team. Nine members of the team volunteered their time on Saturday, April 5 to visit the Baptist Children's Hospital.
The effort to reach out to Baptist Children's Hospital, led by Chrisna Luus, is an ongoing one to build a solid relationship through ongoing involvement. The entire visit was organized by the team.
