Cabas, Frings Lead Men's Soccer Past FAU

Steven Jair Cabas and Sebastian Frings once again provided the offense for the FIU men's soccer team as the Golden Panthers (5-9-0) beat the Owls of Florida Atlantic (4-8-2) by the score of 2-0, Monday night at the FIU Soccer Stadium. Cabas gave FIU the lead in the first half on a penalty kick and Frings iced the game 60 minutes later to propel FIU to its fifth victory of the season.

The penalty kick made it three times this year that FIU has scored on a penalty kick, with the Golden Panthers winning all three contests. Conversely, FIU has been victimized by two penalty kicks this season, both in losses.

Sebastian Frings nearly scored his seventh goal of the season in the 25th minute when a ball was served to him deep in the box and the German forward volleyed it. However his attempt was wide.

Less than a minute later, however, FIU would take the lead on a penalty kick by Jair Cabas The PK was set up by Frings who made a run down the right side and sent a low cross through the box. The pass was stopped by an FAU defender, however the ball bounced up and was touched by the player's hand, setting up the penalty. Cabas did not miss, pounding the ball into the top left corner for his sixth score of the year and a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Panthers would strike again, this time 85th minute as Sebastian Frings scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season. Frings' goal was set up by a beautiful throw-in from Jordan Fernandez who tossed the ball deep into the box, allowing Frings to put a touch in it and net the put-away score. The eight goals are the most by an FIU player since Juan Guerra scored eight in 2007.

Phillip Lamarre got the win between the posts, he made two saves and recorded his third shutout of the season.

FIU will resume conference play on Saturday, October 24 as they host South Carolina at 7 p.m.
