Women's Soccer Clinches Record-Breaking Win Versus UALR

MIAMI - From the moment sophomore Thaisa Moreno pumped her fist after drawing a penalty shot, you knew the forward expected nothing less than a goal.

Turns out Moreno's sixth goal of the season was also her third game-winner in the FIU women's soccer team's 1-0 victory versus UALR on Friday night. With the win, the Golden Panthers (9-5-3, 7-1-1) broke the school record for the most wins during the Sun Belt season.

"With everything that was here, Parents Weekend and the pressure of getting this record-breaking win, the girls were able to get it done and at the same point get a shutout," coach Thomas Chestnutt said. "We're very happy with that."

The Golden Panthers limited the Trojans (6-10-1, 3-5-1) to three shots in the first half while taking seven of their own. Nine minutes into the game, April Perry took a shot from about eight yards outside of the box, but the ball went wide left.

UALR goalie Jane Picarelli saved Moreno's shot at the 13-minute mark. Sophomore Katrina Rose had a great look at the net from the right side after receiving the ball from Victoria Miliucci nearly, but the ball sailed wide.

FIU finally scored after Moreno drew a penalty kick with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half. She cooly finished the penalty, lifting FIU to its eighth-consecutive unbeaten game.

"I wasn't nervous," Moreno said. "We've been taking penalty shots in practice."

FIU continued to keep UALR away from the net after the half as the Trojans did not record a shot until 14:30 remained the in the game. Of their nine conference opponents thus far, the Golden Panthers have held all but two teams to one goal or less. Friday night's shutout was the sixth of the season and the fourth for goalkeeper Kaitlyn Savage.

"Defensively, we're getting a little bit stingier," Chestnutt said. "We put a lot into playing good defense as a team and we've been able to hold teams out during the stretch. That's been a big key."

The Golden Panthers return to the field on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host Arkansas State.
