Men's Soccer Snaps Losing Streak to Gamecocks

MIAMI - The FIU men's soccer team broke an eight-game losing streak to South Carolina on Saturday night with a 0-0 double-overtime tie against the Gamecocks.

Though the Golden Panthers (5-9-1, 0-5-1) have still not claimed a win in the series, it was the first time since September 20, 1987, that they played to a tie. FIU kept South Carolina's Jimmy Maurer active, forcing the goalkeeper to make six saves throughout the night.

The Gamecocks (7-5-3, 2-1-2), who are ranked fourth in the NCAA South Region poll, were held to two shots on goal. Meanwhile, William Thompson and Sebastian Frings led four different Panthers who took shots on goal with two shots each.

Each squad took six shots in the first half but battled to a 0-0 tie at the break. FIU's best scoring opportunity came with just under 10 minutes to play.

Thompson fired from inside the box, but there was a cluster in front of the net and his shot was blocked. Frings rebounded and tried with a shot of his own, which Maurer saved.

Schuyler Reardon nearly ended the game three minutes into the first overtime, but his shot hit the left post and FIU recovered to keep the game alive.

The Golden Panthers return to the field on Nov. 1 when they host Kentucky at 1 p.m. for the final home game of the season
