MIAMI - Though FIU struck first, Marshall rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Golden Panthers men's soccer team in Saturday's conference home opener.
The squads battled through a fairly equal first half. FIU outshot Marshall, 7-6, and both keepers recorded two saves. However, the injury-plagued Golden Panthers (3-6-0) seemed to run out of gas in the second half, and Marshall (5-4-1) came away with the win.
FIU took the lead when freshman Sebastian Frings scored his sixth goal of the season from a Steven Jair Cabas assist before the 15-minute mark of the first half.
Marshall capitalized off an FIU foul to knot the score with roughly 26 minutes remaining in the game. Diego Ayala inserted the ball near the goal and Devin Perkins headed it for the score.
Six minutes later, the Thundering Herd's Kyle Sniatecki took a shot from the top of the box, and FIU keeper Shane Lopez deflected the ball. Dustin Dawes was right there to rebound and get the ball past Lopez for the game-winning goal.
The Golden Panthers continued to fight with three solid looks at the net in the final three minutes. Diego Tamburus kicked the ball into Cabas off a corner, but the header went high. Tamburus tried with two shots of his own, including a breakaway from the right side, but both went wide left.
The Golden Panthers return to the field on Wednesday when they host UCF at 7 p.m.
