Arkansas Capitalizes off Corner Plays to Top Women's Soccer

MIAMI - The FIU women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to undefeated Arkansas on Sunday afternoon in its final non-conference match of the season.

The Golden Panthers (2-4-2) took five shots on goal but were never able to capitalize off the opportunities.

"I think we need to work on staying disciplined and focused the whole game because we tend to stray away from our roles sometimes," sophomore Victoria Miliucci said. "We play really well when we're on, but we just have to try to do it consistently."

In the first half, freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Savage tallied four saves, including an impressive block off a header from Kelly O'Connor less than five minutes into the game.

The Golden Panthers nearly scored at 15:35 when Deana Rossi got past the Razorbacks keeper, but her shot didn't have enough juice to make it to the net before Kate Singleton kicked it safely out of bounds.

With roughly nine minutes remaining in the first period, the Razorbacks (6-0-2) drew a corner and Savage deflected Tara Zika's shot off the play but unfortunately, Ally Atkins was there to kick one in off the save.

Arkansas struck again by drawing another corner nearly 18 minutes into the second half. Atkins backed in a pass with her heel to Kat Moffett, who snuck in the goal to increase the lead to 2-0.

"Overall it was a pretty good performance from our team, but you're talking about an unbeaten team and a pretty good performance, doesn't get it against an undefeated team," Coach Thomas Chestnutt said. "Obviously Arkansas showed us some deficiencies that still exist. However, saying that, I would say our deficiencies aren't as great as they were earlier in the season. I think we've definitely improved quite a bit there. We are a stronger team heading into conference this season than we were last year."

FIU begins conference season on Friday at 8 p.m. at Middle Tennessee.
