Men's Soccer Done In by Penalty Kick in 1-0 Loss to FGCU

In a physical contest that saw three red cards and two yellows, a foul inside the box and the subsequent penalty kick decided the match as Florida Gulf Coast beat FIU 1-0, Tuesday night in Miami. FIU keeper Shane Lopez was great between the posts, but he couldn't turn away a PK in the 68th minute as the Golden Panthers fell in their season opener

The Golden Panthers had the first scoring chance of the match on a corner kick in the seventh minute that Sebastian Frings headed dangerously, but a foul was called in the box.

In the 15th minute, FGCU nearly took the lead on a free kick from just outside the box that Shane Lopez made an outstanding one-handed diving save on, keeping the match scoreless.

Chris Lamarre had a similar opportunity in the 22nd minute, taking a free shot from outside the box, but he hit it right into the wall of Eagle defenders.

In the last few second of the first half, Diego Tamburus took control of a ball inside the box and took an off balance shot that hit off an FGCU defender's head, ending the scoring threat and the half with no score.

A little less than four minutes into the second half, FGCU's Caleib Lynch was issued a red card, leaving the Eagles a man down.

In the 65th minute, FGCU's Scott Harrison took a pass inside the box and fired on goal, but he was turned away by Lopez. However, even with the save, the ball bounced off the crossbar. Luckily for FIU, the balled was cleared by an FIU defender.

Three minutes later, Harrison took another dangerous shot, this one bouncing off the cross bar and off the post. On the ensuing rebound, a foul was called against FIU, setting up a penalty kick for the Eagles. Lopez guessed right, but still wasn't able to stop the shot by Cristian Raudales as Florida Gulf Coast took a 1-0 lead.

In the 80th minute, Shane Lopez was red-carded for committing a foul outside the box. With Phillip Lamarre, FIU's only other keeper, having to sit out after receiving a red card in his last game of 2008, FIU had to put Phillip's brother, Chris in goal. The younger Lamarre was immediately tested as the free kick by Harrison was heading in before Lamarre made a great save, sending the ball over the goal and out of play.

In the 86th minute, FIU's Joseph Dawkins received a red card of his own, leaving the Golden Panthers to play a man down for the final four minutes.

FIU was not able to muster any offense in the waning minutes of the match as FGCU held on for the 1-0 victory. The loss drops FIU's record to 0-1-0, while FGCU's moves to 1-0-0 on the young season.

For the Golden Panthers, Shane Lopez finished with six saves, including several in highlight fashion. Diego Tamburus had three shots, two of them on goal, while Sebastian Frings added three shots of his own.

FIU returns to action on Friday, September 4 at 7 p.m. as they play host to St. Thomas.
