TROY, Ala. (Oct. 1, 2010) -The FIU women's soccer team cruised to a 2-0 victory over Troy on Friday, snapping the Trojans' league-best unbeaten streak of seven games.
Heading into the game, Troy led the Sun Belt in points, and as a result, ranked among the top 10 percent in the nation for scoring offense (2.3 goals per game). The Panthers (6-4-1, 3-0 SBC) held the Trojans (7-3-1, 2-1 SBC)Â to just two shots the entire match.
"Keeping a team to two shots is a pretty impressive feat. We shut down what up until now was a highly potent attack. To limit them to two shots and only one shot on frame says a lot for our team," Head Coach Thomas Chestnutt said. "The first half we probably could have had a little better play - we weren't very convincing. In the second half we felt like we really controlled the game and made it a convincing win at the end. Troy was very confident, a very well-coached team and they were hard to crack. You have to give credit to them."
Freshman forward Chelsea Leiva scored the third game-winner of her career at 15:30 in the first half. Leiva picked up a ball wide, dribbled past two defenders and bent the ball low into the far corner from 12 yards out.
FIU added an insurance goal at 72:53 when freshman Kim Lopez found senior captain Kassandra Sorzano. Lopez beat two defenders on the dribble and played the ball into the box, allowing Sorzano to take the ball down off her chest and half-volley it into the net for her fourth goal of the year -- a career high.
"At 1-0 you're not safe, so to be able to do it and help us seal the game, it's exciting, especially for me because I'm not used to scoring," Sorzano said with a laugh.
Goalkeeper Melanie Raimo saved Troy's only shot of the second half to clinch FIU's third straight shutout and the fifth of the year.
"Mel had a commanding performance. Her organization and communication were great," Chestnutt said. "Nicole DiPerna had a good second half, and Kim Lopez also worked tirelessly and caused a lot of problems for Troy. The seniors showed their experience and really pulled us through the game."
FIU travels to South Alabama on Sunday for a 2 p.m. game.
"We're feeling confident but we're not overly confident," Lopez said. "We know we have to step it up every game because we're the team to beat."
