Women's Soccer Edged 3-1 in First Conference Loss

MIAMI, Fla. (Oct. 10, 2010) - The FIU women's soccer team dropped its first conference game of the season in a 3-1 decision to Middle Tennessee on Sunday afternoon. FIU (8-5-1, 5-1 SBC) tied the score at 1 before halftime, but the Blue Raiders (7-8, 4-2 SBC) were able to score two goals in the second half to put the game away.

"We didn't have the strongest attack as we usually do today, so I think that's why we fell short," junior captain April Perry said. "[The loss is] not easy, especially after coming off a five-game win streak. We're really disappointed that we let up today, but I think it's just going to make us more aggressive for the next game to make sure we come back to get another streak going."

Middle Tennessee struck first at the 14-minute mark off a corner by Whitney Jorgenson that found the Raiders' leading scorer, Vanessa Mueggler, in front of the net.

FIU tied the game 15 minutes later when senior captain Kassandra Sorzano crossed a ball into freshman Crystal McNamara inside the box for her first goal of the season.

In the first four minutes of the second half, Mueggler struck again with the game-winner off an assist from Shan Jones. The Blue Raiders added an insurance goal at 54:43 when Jessica Oseguera connected on a free kick from 30 yards out.

FIU hits the road on Friday at 8 p.m. when the Panthers take on North Texas.
