DENTON, Texas -- The FIU women's soccer team threatened North Texas' recent success with an early 1-0 lead, but the Mean Green managed to rally for a 2-1 victory on Friday night to extend their win streak to five.
The Panthers (8-6-1, 5-2 SBC) jumped out to a 1-0 advantage at 16:42 in the game when senior captain Mayara da Fonseca Bordin scored off a penalty kick for her first goal of the year.
North Texas (10-5-1, 5-2 SBC) responded less than four minutes later when Michelle Young found Kelsey Hodges on a breakaway. The two squads battled through 56 scoreless minutes until Ellen Scarfone assisted Young for the game-winner.
"We just couldn't get the gears moving tonight," Head Coach Thomas Chestnutt said. "It was one of those days when nothing seemed to work right. North Texas stuck to their game plan and battled hard. They deserved the win."
FIU travels to unbeaten No. 25 Denver on Sunday at 1 p.m.
