MIAMI (Oct. 16, 2010) --- The FIU men's soccer team fell to the UAB Blazers, 2-0, in Conference USA action at the FIU Soccer Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 16.
The Blazers (8-4, 2-2 C-USA) scored a goal in each half to snap the Panthers' (6-6, 1-3 C-USA) two-game winning streak.
UAB jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute with a goal by Josh Stewart. A clearance by goalkeeper Shane Lopez of a Michal Mravec corner kick, fell to the feet of Stewart, who was positioned at the edge of center-third of the field. The Blazer midfielder ran up, took a low-driving shot from 24-yards out, which got past Lopez and found the back of the net. The goal was the first of the season for Stewart.
Two minutes later, FIU had its best scoring opportunity of the first half. Sebastian Frings flicked a header from six-yards out in the center of the area. However, Blazer goalkeeper, Tucker Stone, was able to corral the shot for his only save of the night.
UAB added to its lead in the second half when Babayele Sodade was awarded a penalty kick in the 47th minute for a handball foul in the box. Sodade beat Lopez for the UAB forward's eighth goal of the season.
FIU continued to pressure UAB and created a number of chances, but could not get on the scoreboard. The Panthers had a man advantage in the final five minutes after Stewart received a red card. FIU pushed during the final five minutes and created two of its eight corner kicks during that time. Despite the man advantage, FIU could not erase the two-goal deficit as the team fell, 2-0.
FIU out-shot UAB 15-9 in the contest and held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Frings led all Panthers with four shots.
The Panthers will host Hartwick College on Friday, Oct. 22. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
