Women's Soccer Keeps Shutout Streak Alive

MOBILE, Ala. - Freshman forward Chelsea Leiva added another game-winning goal to her resume on Sunday afternoon, propelling the FIU women's soccer team to a 1-0 win at South Alabama. Of the Panthers' seven wins this season, Leiva is responsible for four game-winners, including Friday's goal at Troy.

"In my expectations of college, I just didn't see it going this way at all, but I'm really happy," Leiva said. "I feel like, yeah I'm scoring goals but it's the whole team -- I think we're all doing well. I really don't think I'm making that much of an impact on the team. It just happens that I'm putting the ball in the back of the net."

For just the second time in school history, FIU has posted four-straight shutout victories, and the Panthers are now one shutout shy of tying a 24-year-old school record for most consecutive shutouts in a season. After Denver's 4-0 victory over ULM on Sunday, the Panthers (7-4-1, 4-0 SBC) and the Pioneers sit atop the conference standings as the only two remaining unbeaten teams.

"I think mentally we are very united right now and even though we had some bad moments in the game today our back line is doing good work and I think now our biggest challenge is trying to finish the opportunites that we have on goal," senior captain Mayara da Fonseca Bordin said. "The four shutouts -- it's very exciting but at the same time we have a lot of soccer left to play, so we have to keep our feet on the ground so we can improve."

Leiva started the attack for FIU, forcing South Alabama keeper Melissa Drish to make two saves six minutes into the game. Leiva connected at 19:02 from 35 yards out with a left-footer for her sixth goal of the season.FIU recorded 19 shots on goal, led by Bordin's five attempts, while FIU's defense confined South Alabama's offense to just three shots on goal.

"The first 30 minutes today, outside of our finishing, was a class in attacking and ball possession," Head Coach Thomas Chestnutt said. "Everything was very fluid today. The only thing that lacked was putting the ball into the back of the net. We talked about it and that's where we have to learn to put a team away. When we're moving the ball, creating those opportunities, so we have to put them away."

FIU returns to Miami on Friday to face WKU at 8 p.m. and continues play at home on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders were the only Sun Belt team last year that FIU lost to during the regular season.

"We want to prove that we're here again this season to hold our No. 1 spot and we want to do even better this year against teams that we fell short against last year," junior Victoria Miliucci said. "We're excited to come home for some more conference games and play in front of our home crowd."
