Women's Soccer Bests Florida Atlantic in Regular Season Finale

BOCA RATON, Fla. - A late goal by freshman Chelsea Leiva propelled the FIU women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Florida Atlantic on Friday night. With the win, FIU clinched its second-consecutive 10-win season for the first time in a decade.

The Panthers (10-8-1, 7-4 SBC) and Owls (6-12, 5-6 SBC) battled through 77 scoreless minutes as FIU out-shot Florida Atlantic, 16-5.

At 78:27, Leiva took a shot from the far right corner and connected just inside the far post for her 10th goal of the season and the fifth game-winner, delivering FIU's first win in Boca Raton since 2000.

"It's a great way to end the regular season," Leiva said. "Even though the score was 1-0, I think this was the best win of the year. We worked really hard and you could just tell in the warmup that we were ready and that everybody was there wanting to win."

With the shutout, FIU notched its eighth of the year, tying the school record for most shutouts in a season set in 1986.

"With the way we've been up and down lately, today was a solid win. We raised our intensity and it was a full team effort," senior captain Kassandra Sorzano said. "The shutout record -- give credit to Melanie (Raimo) and the defense because they come in every game and work really hard."

Added Head Coach Thomas Chestnutt: "When I came to FIU in 2007, we talked about the expectations and seeing it come to fruition is a credit to all the hard work the girls have put in. It was just great to see the team put together a complete game tonight. They played well on both sides of the ball, and a win going into the Sun Belt Tournament gives us a boost. This group has a lot more soccer left in them, and I'm really proud of how we've matured throughout the season. We just have to play each game as if it was our last."

FIU has secured the No. 4 seed in the Sun Belt Tournament and will face No. 5 Troy at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3.
