Women's Soccer Bows Out of SBC Tournament

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The FIU women's soccer team fell 1-0 in the SBC Tournament semifinal on Thursday night to nationally ranked (No. 21) and No. 1 seed Denver. The Panthers finish the season with an 11-9-1 record one day after recording its first post-season win since 2004.

FIU stifled the Pioneers' attack for most of the game, allowing just one shot on goal, which Jessy Battelli happened to head in at 83:13 off a corner kick by Nicholette DiGiacomo.

The Panthers attempted to tie the score with 5:20 remaining when Mayara da Fonseca Bordin found April Perry, but the junior captain's shot went high over the crossbar.

FIU outshot Denver, 12-4, and forced keeper Lara Campbell to make three saves throughout the game. FIU goalkeeper Melanie Raimo finished the year with a 0.90 goals against average, ranking second in FIU history for lowest average in a single season.

"I'm very proud of the way the team played. Mentally, tactically and physically, the team went after it," Head Coach Thomas Chestnutt said. "At the end of the day, soccer can be cruel and it was today. But on behalf of the staff, I just want to say thanks to the team and specifically to the seniors who gave a lot to this program and helped to establish where it is headed. They planted a good seed for the future of this program and we owe a lot to them. It's unfortunate that we couldn't give them a championship this year. We wish the best of luck to Denver. They are a top-quality team and [Denver Head Coach] Jeff Hooker always has a great team."
