DALLAS - The FIU women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to SMU on Friday night but not for lack of effort.
The Panthers came out hungry with six shots on goal. Though FIU's defense held SMU to four shots on goal, an unintentional shot ended up finding the back of the net. Lauren Shepherd scored off a cross from the far right corner with 13 and a half minutes left to play.
Freshmen Chelsea Leiva and Nicole DiPerna both appeared in the starting lineup in their first collegiate game, and newcomers Kim Lopez, Kelly Hutchinson and Crystal McNamara comprised three of FIU's four reserves for the night.
Leiva wasted no time making her mark as a Panther, taking FIU's first shot on goal before the 4-minute mark. Forward April Perry led FIU with three shots - two on goal - while Lopez also attempted two shots on goal in her first outing.
Up next, FIU travels to Arkansas on Sunday for a 2 p.m. matchup.
