MIAMI (April 3, 2011) - The FIU women's tennis team suffered its first home loss of the season, falling to the No. 37-ranked SMU Mustangs, 6-1, on Sunday, April 3, at the FIU Tennis Courts.

The loss snapped a nine-game winning-streak for the Panthers, who dropped to 10-6 on the year.

FIU fell behind early, losing two of the three doubles matches to start the contest. Sophomore Rita Maisak and freshman Giulietta Boha fell to Edyta Cieplucha and Heather Steinbauer, 8-3. The duo of Liset Brito and Maria Spenceley defeated Marta Lesniak and Aleksandra Malyarchikova, 8-2, to draw the doubles matches even at 1-all. SMU's Shahzoda Hatamova and Kris Roberts downed the tandem of Lisa Johnson and Christine Seredni, 8-5, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In singles play, FIU tied the match, 1-1, after Boha earned her 10th victory of the season, downing Roberts in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-0. The Panthers jumped out to early leads in a number of their singles matches, however the Mustangs (15-4) responded with five-straight singles wins to take the outing, 6-1. Brito (No. 57) fell to Lesniak (No. 9), 6-4, 6-2, Seredni lost to Cieplucha, 7-5, 7-6 (4), while Johnson dropped a 7-5, 7-6 (3) contest to Steinbauer. Spenceley fell to No. 117 Malyarchikova, 6-1, 6-2, and Maisak lost to Hatamova 7-6 (1), 6-3.

The Panthers will close out the 2011 regular season, hosting the UCF Knights on Saturday, April 16. The match is schedule for 11:00 a.m.
