MIAMI - The FIU women's soccer team (2-2-0) defeated Florida Tech, 2-0, on a rainy evening at the FIU Soccer Stadium in Miami, Fla.
In the 8th minute of the match, FIU senior Kelly Ann Hutchinson (Ontario, Canada) buried a beautifully placed ball past the FIT keeper, Mist Eliasdottir, on a pass back by sophomore Chelsea Leiva (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) to go up 1-0. The goal was Hutchinson's second of the young season.
After keeping possession and pressing Florida Tech for a majority of the match, freshman Johanna Volz (Portland, Ore.) delivered an insurance goal in the 72nd minute with an assist from Hutchinson and senior Deana Rossi (New Port Richey, Fla.). Lopez took a rebound off the FIT keeper and controlled the ball long enough to pass it to Lopez who scored her first-career collegiate goal.
The Panthers return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 2 to take on UMKC. Match time is 7:00 p.m. at the FIU Soccer Stadium.
