Box Score MIAMI (Nov. 24, 2012) – The FIU Panthers fell to the ULM Warhawks, 23-17, in overtime in the final contest of the 2012 season.
In its last two games, the FIU defensive line held its opponents to minus-3 yards on the ground combined. With 15 rushing attempts against ULM, running back
Kedrick Rhodes set the FIU career rushing attempts record with 441 attempts in his three seasons played.
Darian Mallary led all rushers with 64 yards on the ground while
E.J. Hilliard completed 22-of-31 passes for 226 yards and two scores. In his final game as a Panther,
Wayne Times hauled in a career-high 11 passes for a team-high 63 yards.
Willis Wright and
De'Andre Jasper each caught touchdowns as well.
After ULM took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, the Panthers responded with a minute left in the first half to knot the contest, 7-7, when Hilliard found Jasper for an 11-yard touchdown. The score was the first receiving touchdown for the freshman out of Miami Jackson. The Warhawks would go into the half with a 10-7 lead after connecting on a 45-yard field goal with one-second left of the clock.
With 1:58 remaining in the third quarter, FIU's
Jack Griffin tied the game at 10-10 with his 48th career field goal, a 22-yarder, adding to his school record.
ULM once again took the lead after the Warhawks R.J. Young returned a Hilliard fumble for a touchdown. The extra point gave ULM a 17-10 lead to start the fourth quarter.
With ULM in the victory formation, FIU DT Josh Forney made one of the most memorable plays of the season, going full speed into the offensive line when the ball was hiked. The
ULM center fell backwards and quarterback Kolton Browning fumbled the exchange. Forney dove on the loose ball to give FIU a chance with seconds left on the clock.
FIU's Wright then caught a 58-yard highlight bomb from Hilliard with 14 seconds left on the clock to put the Panthers within a game-tying extra point. Griffin knocked the kick
through on the point after to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, a 41-yard field goal by FIU's Griffin was blocked and ULM won on a 15-yard pass from Browning to Brent Leonard for a 23-17 Warhawks victory.
FIU finishes the season with a record of 3-9, 2-6 SBC, while ULM is 8-4, 6-2 SBC
