Box Score MIAMI (Dec. 13, 2012) – A trio of Panthers reached the double-digit scoring plateau on Thursday night as FIU defeated in-state rival UCF, 66-49, at U.S. Century Bank Arena. With the victory, FIU improves to 4-4 (1-2 SBC) while UCF falls to 3-7 (0-0 C-USA).
FIU jumped out to an early seven-point lead, but UCF bounced back to knot the score at 14-14 with 9:47 remaining in the opening stanza. The Panthers would then go on a 10-5 run to close out the half, taking a 24-19 advantage into the break.
In the second half, the Knights cut the deficit to three at 24-21 just over 30 seconds into the period, before FIU rattled off seven-straight points to go ahead by 10 at 31-21. The Panthers took their largest lead of the contest at 59-35 on a three-pointer by sophomore
Kamika Idom with 4:54 remaining in the game, and FIU went on for a 66-49 victory.
Junior
Jerica Coley led all scorers with 22 points while Idom chipped in with a season-high 14 points and junior
Marita Davydova added 12 points. Davydova also added a team-high 12 rebounds, marking her third-career double-double.
Coley, whose 20-plus point performance marks her fourth such outing of the season, tied her own single-game school record with a perfect 11-of-11 mark from the charity stripe. The 2012-13 SBC Preseason Player of the Year also contributed eight rebounds, a season-high-tying seven assists, two blocks, and one steal in 40 minutes of action.
Idom was an unblemished 6-of-6 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from beyond the three-point arc, as FIU shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53) from the field while holding UCF to 31.0 percent (18-of-58) shooting. The Panthers out-rebounded the Knights, 46-28, for the contest to mark a season-high rebounding margin of +18.
FIU will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 15, when the Panthers host the Dartmouth Big Green. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at U.S. Century Bank Arena.
