BOCA RATON, Fla. (March 22, 2012) --- The FIU women's tennis team (5-12) defeated the Florida Atlantic Owls (9-5), 5-2, on Wednesday, March 21, at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton, Fla.
The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the contest, winning the doubles portion as sophomore Giulietta Boha and freshman Karyn Guttormsen defeated the pair of Taylor Briggs and Justine Humair, 8-2, and seniors Lisa Johnson and Christine Seredni downed FAU's Catalina Ene and Natasha Phillips, 8-5.
FIU earned the victory, taking four singles matches to make the score 5-2. Freshman Sarah McLean defeated Natasha Basma, 6-0, 6-2, for her sixth victory of the season. Johnson downed Ene, 6-2, 7-5. It marked the San Diego, Calif., native's second-straight singles win. Guttormsen won a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, match with Cassie Bergeson. The victory was her team-best eighth of the spring. Seredni defeated Erika Mrazkova, 6-1, 6-3, for her third singles win in dual matches this year.
The win snapped a two-match, losing skid and gave the Panthers their first road victory of the season. It also improved FIU to 25-1 all-time versus the Owls.
The Panthers will next host Brown on Friday, March 30. The match is slated for 1:00 p.m.
