FIU Falls to North Texas in Sun Belt Conference Finals

DENTON, Texas (April 22, 2012) --- The FIU women's tennis team fell to the No. 59-ranked North Texas Mean Green, 4-2, in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Finals on Sunday, April 22, at the Waranch Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of North Texas.

North Texas (18-6) took an early 1-0 lead as the Mean Green won the doubles point in two-straight matches. Freshman Karyn Guttormsen and sophomore Giulietta Boha fell to the duo of Kseniya Bardabush and Valentina Starkova, 8-3, while junior Rita Maisak and freshman Sarah McLean dropped an 8-3 set to Barbora Vykydalova and Nadia Lee.

The Panthers tied the match at 1-1, when Maisak made quick work of Bardabush, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 1 position. FIU took a 2-1 lead following a win by senior Lisa Johnson over Starkova, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, at No. 3. The victory was the seventh of the season for the San Diego, Calif., native and 38th of her collegiate career.

North Texas responded with two-straight singles victories to take a 3-2 lead. At the No. 5 position, senior Christine Seredni lost to Ilona Serchenko, 6-4, 6-3, while Boha dropped a three-set match to Paula Dinuta, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, at the No. 6.

The Mean Green clinched match and the Sun Belt crown with a 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 win by Irina Paraschiv over Guttormsen at the No. 4 position.

The match marked the eighth-straight finals appearance for the Panthers.

The loss dropped FIU to 33-9 all-time in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament as the Panthers made their 12th finals appearance overall (5-7).

With the loss, FIU finished the 2012 campaign with a 7-15 record.
