Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Oct. 16, 2013) – The FIU men's soccer team (5-7-0, 1-3-0 C-USA) dropped a tough 1-0 decision to the UAB Blazers on Wednesday night in Birmingham, Ala. The Panthers outshot the Blazers, 16-5, with five coming on goal in the loss.
UAB entered Wednesday night's contest as the top scoring team in the country. The Panthers came out strong in the first half, holding the Blazers to just one shot. Meanwhile, FIU had its chances in the first stanza, recording seven shots, three of them coming on goal. Senior
Gonzalo Frechilla had his shot saved in the fourth minute of the contest. Freshman
Ismael Longo's shot in the 16th minute went on goal too but was stopped. Sophomore
Sean McFarlane put one on
net as well in the 41st minute, but the contest remained knotted up at zero.
The Blazers struck fast in the second half. After being held to just the one shot in the first half, UAB took a 1-0 lead on Alex Clay's fourth goal of the season.
Following the UAB score, FIU continued its offensive pressure as it went on to record seven of the next nine shots between both squads in a 14-minute time span. Two of those shots were on goal.
The opportunities would continue as junior
Quentin Albrecht had a shot go wide in the 76th minute and freshman
Marvin Hezel had a header opportunity that went high in the 78th minute, allowing UAB to hang on to the close 1-0 victory.
Next up for FIU is a home contest with Old Dominion this Saturday, Oct. 19. Kickoff is set from the FIU Soccer Stadium for 6:30 p.m.
