In the first half, McFarlane provided a nice boost in FIU's attacking third of the field as all his shots came in the first stanza. McFarlane had a close opportunity in the 10th minute as he headed a ball that went just high of the goal. Then in the 21st minute, the sophomore broke away, but ODU goalie Sean
Stowe made a nice stop. Just moments later, freshman
Jamar Campion-Hinds had his shot saved by Stowe as well.
Two close opportunities came for FIU and ODU in the 56th minute. ODU's Ivan Militar had his shot saved by Mion. Then on the counter-attack, junior
Quentin Albrecht ripped a shot from the top corner of the 18 and sailed it just wide of the far post. The Monarchs would hit the post in the 63rd minute as well, but the contest remained scoreless.
Hopkinson's goal in the 82nd minute came on a header with the cross coming to the near post from Gideon Asante.
