Box Score MIAMI (Oct. 6, 2013) – The FIU men's soccer team earned its first Conference USA victory of the 2013 season with a 4-0 victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd on Sunday evening. With the win, the Panthers improve to 5-5-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play, heading into a two-game road trip at new Mexico and UAB.
Junior
Quentin Albrecht and freshman
Marvin Hezel led the way for the Panthers, each recording three points on a goal and an assist. Freshman goalkeeper
Lawrence Craggs tallied his second shutout of the season. The four goals for the Panthers are the most for an FIU team in a C-USA match since Nov. 6, 2005, when that team netted six goals against East Carolina.
FIU's first goal came in the 15th minute, as Albrecht netted his fourth goal of the season. The junior co-captain's goal came off a throw in, where freshman
Nicholas Midttun found
Luis Betancur, who connected with Albrecht. From there, Albrecht stuck it near post to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead early in the
contest.
The Panthers tallied another goal just six minutes later. Hezel found a wide open senior
Gonzalo Frechilla outside the top of the box. The co-captain struck it low from 20 yards out to find the back of the net to give FIU a 2-0 advantage in the 21st minute. Also earning an assist on the goal was Albrecht. Hezel had his turn scoring just one minute into the second half then via an unassisted goal, which was his second of the year to give FIU a 3-0 lead.
The Panthers earned another insurance goal in the 88th minute when freshman
Jamar Campion-Hinds crossed a ball towards the far post and found junior
Sean McFarlane on the head, his second goal of the year to seal up the 4-0 victory for FIU.
FIU now turns to a two-game road trip, beginning at C-USA foe New Mexico on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. Following the showdown with the Lobos, the Panthers will travel to UAB on Oct. 16 for a matchup with the Blazers.
