MIAMI (Nov. 16, 2013) - Three players scored in double-figures as the FIU men's basketball team (4-2) extended its winning-streak to four games, defeating the Texas Southern Tigers (2-2), 70-68, Saturday night from Lime Court at U.S. Century Bank Arena.
Senior Tymell Murphy recorded his 34th-career double-figure scoring performance and his 12th-career double-double. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native finished with 22 points, going 10-of-14 from the floor. The 22-point performance marks the ninth time the 6-foot-5 forward had score 20-or-more points during his FIU career. Sophomore Jerome Frink posted 16 points, extending his streak to four-straight games scoring in double-figures. The streak also ties his career-best for consecutive double-digit scoring games. Redshirt junior Dennis Mavin tallied 11 for his third game this season with at least 10 points.
The Tigers jumped out to a 10-point, 13-3, advantage in the first half, before redshirt senior Rakeem Buckles drained his second 3-pointer in the first five minutes. His first trey extended FIU's streak to 151-straight games with a converted bucket from beyond the arc, dating back to Dec. 20, 2008.
Murphy tallied six points in a 42-second span to bring the Panthers within four, 15-11. Mavin followed the ensuing inbound pass and stole the ball just before half court. He drove to the basket and cut the Tigers' lead to four, 22-18, with 9:41 remaining in the half. After Mavin went 1-of-2 on free throws, Murphy snatched the rebound and dished it to Frink, whose dunk bought the Panthers within seven near the six-minute mark. A goaltending call off a Frink jumper with 45.8 seconds left in the half sent the two teams into halftime knotted at 34-all.
The fast-paced first half ended with the Panthers shooting 37 percent, going 14-of-37 from the floor and converting 4-of-10 from the line. Murphy went 6-of-9 for 14 points with six rebounds, while Mavin and redshirt senior Raymond Taylor had eight and six points, respectively.
Thirty seconds into the second half, FIU got its first lead of the game, 37-34, when Frink converted from 3-point land. He then gave the Panthers its largest lead of the game with his second trey of the half, as FIU pulled ahead, 46-40 heading into a Texas Southern timeout. After early foul trouble, Buckles blocked a jumper just shy of the 13-minute mark to preserve a five-point Panther lead. Junior Marco Porcher Jimenez and Frink dished back-to-back layups to give FIU a seven-point, 50-43, lead with 12 minutes left in the game.
Texas Southern tied the game, 63-63, following a technical foul call on FIU. A Mavin jumper quickly gave FIU the lead with four minutes to play in the game. Taylor gave the Panthers a five-point cushion with 50 seconds left in the game and secured the Panthers' victory.
FIU shot 45.2 percent for the night, going 28-of-62 from the floor. A strong Panther defensive corps held the Tigers to well under its season average of 92.3 points per game. In a game that saw five lead changes and four tied scores, FIU's largest lead of the night was seven points.
The Panthers host the Stetson Hatters on Monday at 7:00 p.m. before hitting the road to face Bethune-Cookman for a mid-week contest on Thursday, Nov. 21. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
