Panthers win twice, 8-3, 6-2, over Savannah State and Hartford in FIU Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI (Feb. 22, 2013) – The FIU Panthers (8-5) picked up where they left off last weekend, coming out victorious, 8-3 and 6-2 over Savannah State and Hartford, respectively, at the FIU Softball Complex.

FIU starting pitcher, freshman Corinne Jenkins (3-1), picked up her third win of the season, tossing a complete game, allowing five hits, three runs (two earned), walking one and fanning 10 batters.

The Panthers gave their starting pitcher a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning. After leading the inning off with a walk and two miscues by the Savannah State defense, Nicole Rascon came across home plate to put FIU on the board, 1-0.

Senior Brie Rojas walked and pulled off a double-steal with Jessy Alfonso on third, who reached base on an error by the second baseman, putting the Panthers ahead, 2-0.
Savannah State tied the contest in the top of the second, but FIU took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame.

After Bre Kaye and Krystal Garcia reached base via a walk and a single, respectively, they each advanced a base courtesy of a balk by Savannah State starter, Amanda McDowell. Rascon brought both of them home with a single to left and advanced to second base on the throw home, putting FIU back in front, 4-2.

FIU added another run in the inning and three more in the fourth and fifth, putting the game away at 8-2.

In the second game, the Panthers fell behind, 1-0 in the top of the first, but responded with a three-run first inning of their own.

After Rascon, Alfonso and Amber Curry each reached base, Shelby Graves reached on a fielder's choice to the second baseman who threw home to force out Rascon. Alfonso, Curry and Graves all scored after a throwing error by the catcher, giving the Panthers a 3-1 advantage.

FIU added two more runs in the third, courtesy of a two-run double by Alex Casals, plating Rojas and Curry, who reached via a double and a walk, respectively.
The 5-1 lead increased to 6-1 in the fifth after a Graves RBI single drove in Rojas from third base.

Graves (1-1) earned her first victory of the season, coming on in relief for Shelbie Wagnon. Graves threw five scoreless frames, allowing two walks and striking out six.
FIU will continue tournament action with a pair of games on Saturday, Feb. 23. The Panthers will take on Mercer at 1:30 p.m. followed by an opponent at either 4 p.m. or 6:30 p.m., depending on tournament seeding.
