MIAMI (Feb. 24, 2013) – The FIU women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon, as the Panthers defeated the Arkansas State Red Wolves, 5-2, at the FIU Tennis Courts. With the victory, FIU improves to 1-6 while ASU falls to 2-3.
Doubles play saw the Red Wolves take two of three matches to go ahead 1-0 for the contest. At the No. 1 position Janie Nowland and Ioana Teu teamed up for an 8-6 victory over Rita Maisak and Aleksandra Trufunovic, and Jess Heeps-Eriksen and Sofia Krsmanovic defeated the Panther duo of Magali Holt and Michelle Sabado, 8-2, at No. 3.
Playing at the No. 2 spot, Giulietta Boha and Carlotta Orlando picked up FIU's lone doubles win, defeating Tamara Slijepcevic and Biljana Miloshevska, 8-2.
FIU stormed back in singles play, coming away victorious at the No. 1 through No. 5 positions, as Maisak's 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-3 victory at No. 2 clinched the match for the Panthers. Playing at the top spot, Orlando defeated Slijepcevic (2-6, 6-2, 6-4), while Trifunovic (6-1, 6-1 over Teu) and Boha (6-2, 6-2 over Miloshevska) each won in straight sets, at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
Picking up FIU's fifth singles victory at the No. 5 spot was Holt (4-6, 6-4, 6-2). At No. 6, Sabado dropped a 7-6(5), 6-2 decision to Heeps-Eriksen, to account for the final 5-2 Panther victory.
FIU will return to action on Feb. 28, when the Panthers host St. John's at the FIU Tennis Courts. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
