FIU Golf Places Second at Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge

Miami, Fla. – (FIUSports.com) – FIU closed out its first spring tournament of 2013 claiming second-place at the Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge, held on the Senator Course at Shula's Golf Club in Miami Lakes.  No. 18 N.C. State won the event with a 10-over 874, ahead of FIU's 22-over 886 over three rounds and 54 holes of play.

N.C. State's Lindsay McGetrick won the individual title shooting a four-under 212 (70-71-71), while competing as an individual. The Wolfpack would claim the top three spots in the individual standings with Brittany Marchand (-3) and Augusta James (-2) to follow.

FIU freshman Meghan McLaren (Cambridge, United Kingdom) led the Panthers, finishing in fifth with a three-round two-over, 218 (70-74-74). Senior Yolecci Jimenez (Caracas, Venezuela) put together a career-high finish, bolstered by a final round 71, as the only other Panther in the top 10 placing in a tie for eighth place with a seven-over, 223 (75-77-71). Jimenez began the final day in 23rd place but rose to eighth in the final round.

After N.C. State and FIU, Miami (+31) came in third ahead of host-Maryland (+35). FIU, which is No. 56 in the most recent GOLFSTAT rankings, out-dueled several teams rated higher, including the Hurricanes (No. 53 GOLFSTAT), East Tennessee State (No. 53 GolfWeek), Maryland (No. 54 GolfWeek) and Missouri (No. 55 GOLFSTAT).
Louisville (No. 63 GOLFSTAT) and Kansas (No. 66 GOLFSTAT) also entered the event with solid team rankings.

In three all-time appearances at the Sir Pizza Challenge, FIU has now finished second in two appearances (2011 and 2013) and much-improved from last season's 11th-place showing.

FIU, which is off to its most successful start under Head Coach Joe Vogel has three first-place finishes, one second and one fourth in its five tournaments so far in 2012-13.
FIU next travels to the Second Annual Clover Cup, hosted by Notre Dame, at the Longbow Club in Mesa, Ariz., March 8-10.
