Box Score 2 MIAMI (March 23, 2013) – The Panthers (21-15, 4-3) took two losses at the hands of No. 25 South Alabama on Saturday, 11-5 and 10-0 at the FIU Softball Complex.
In game one, FIU starter
Corinne Jenkins (11-3) lasted just 3 1/3 innings, allowing five hits, four runs (three earned) walking one and striking out a batter.
Two singles by Brittany Campbell and Emily Messer and a fielder's choice to second base put runners at first and third. Jenkins forced Meghan Collins to ground out to first, but a fielding error by
Krystal Garcia, allowed Campbell to score, giving South Alabama the 1-0 advantage.
South Alabama broke the game open in the fourth, knocking Jenkins out of the game in the process. Four solo homeruns by the Jaguars' Julie Moss, Kaitlyn Griffith, Campbell and Brittany Fowler highlighted a five-run inning.
An additional run was added in the fifth inning. After two-out single by the USA's Griffin, a couple of throwing errors on the same play by shortstop
Kayla Burri and first baseman Garcia on a ground ball to short added to the Jaguar lead.
A four-run sixth inning, capped off by a two-run triple by Haley Fagan, stretched the lead to 11-0.
The Panthers tried to climb back into the game in the bottom of the six, managing to score five runs off South Alabama's Farish Beard (11-0). However, the gap was too large for FIU to overcome.
In game two, FIU started out slow, spotting the Jaguars a 6-0 lead after two innings. A single, walk and a throwing error set the table for Julie Moss' three-run double to left center, scoring all three runners to make it 3-0.
An error by third baseman
Jessy Alfonso brought Moss home three batters later to give South Alabama a 4-0 lead.
FIU's fielding woes continued in the second, giving South Alabama two more runs and a 6-0 edge.
A walk and a fielding error on Alfonso put Moss at the plate, who struck a double to left centerfield, her fourth and fifth RBI's of the evening.
South Alabama put the game away in the top of the seventh inning, scoring four runs to give the Jaguars a 10-0 lead.
The Panthers were able to manufacture just three hits off starter, Hannah Campbell (12-5), who tossed the complete game-shutout on just two walks and six strikeouts.
Mariah Dawson (4-10) took the loss, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits, while walking six and striking out six.
FIU and South Alabama will conclude the series on Sunday at noon.
