Box Score 2 Lafayette, La. (March 29, 2013) – The FIU Panthers (21-18, 4-6) dropped both games of a doubleheader against the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, 10-2 (six innings) and 9-5 on Saturday at Lamson Park.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second following a single up the middle by
Krystal Garcia, scoring
Shelby Graves, who singled and advanced to second.
A pair of home runs in the bottom of the second by Shellie Landry (solo) and Sara Corbello (2-run home run) put UL on top, 3-1 after two innings.
Graves came on in relief for starter
Corinne Jenkins (11-4) in the third inning after the Ragin' Cajuns scored two more runs to increase the deficit to 5-1.
Senior
Brie Rojas homered to left field to lead off the fourth, cutting the UL lead to 5-2.
The Ragin' Cajuns ended the game in the bottom of the sixth, putting a five-spot on the scoreboard off Graves and
Shelbie Wagnon. A two-run double by Brianna Cherry drove home pinch-runner Cassidy White and Leandra Maly, who reached via a bunt single, bringing the tally to 7-2. Wagnon came in to walk the next two batters, bringing home the eighth run for UL. Three batters later, Sara Corbello ended the game on a two-run single to right center to clinch the 10-2 mercy-rule victory.
In game two, FIU and starter
Mariah Dawson (4-11) dug themselves into an early 3-0 hole following a three-run homerun off the bat of Matte Haack.
Junior
Rachel Slowik got the Panthers on the scoreboard in the third, blasting a solo homerun to left, making the score, 3-1.
UL struck twice in the bottom of the third, giving the Ragin' Cajuns a 5-1 edge.
The Panthers got themselves back into the game in the fifth with a three-run inning. Senior
Amber Curry drove home two runs on a double, which scored
Kayla Burri (double) and
Bre Kaye (single), to pull FIU to within 5-3. Two batters later, Rojas singled through the right side, scoring Curry from second, bringing the tally to 5-4.
UL responded with a run in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Walsh, to push the lead to 6-4.
FIU scored its fifth run in the sixth on a Burri single that plated Graves, who doubled.
However, UL added three more in the sixth, putting the game out of reach at 9-5.
The Panthers will conclude the series with UL on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET.
