Panthers sweep doubleheader with Ball State, 6-4, 4-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI (March 5, 2013) – The Panthers improved to 14-9 on the season, taking two games from the Ball State Cardinals on Tuesday night at the FIU Softball Complex.

In game one, Ball State's Taylor Cox led off with a walk, and came home on a Hanne Stuedemann two-run homerun to centerfield, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the first.

FIU tied the game at 2 apiece in the bottom of the second on a pair of RBI groundouts by Rachel Slowik and Bre Kaye.

The Panthers took the lead, 3-2 in the bottom of the third frame. Amber Curry reached on a single to second and swiped second base.

The ensuing hitter, Brie Rojas drove Curry home on a single to shallow right.

Aleima Lopez's two-out, three run double to left increased the Panther lead to 6-2 in the fifth inning.

Pitcher Mariah Dawson earned her third win to improve to 3-6, throwing 5 2/3 innings, allowing six hits on two runs (both earned), walking six and fanning five hitters.

Shelbie Wagnon came in to finish the final 1 1/3, giving up two hits, two runs (both earned) and issuing two walks.

In game two, FIU fell behind again after Ball State's Jennifer Gilbert smacked a two-run home run to right field in the top of the fourth inning, giving the Cardinals a 2-0
advantage.

The Panthers completed the comeback in the last of the sixth inning.

Kayla Burri sacrificed Curry and Rojas into scoring position after leading the inning off with a pair of singles.

Lopez came through with her second hit in the clutch, finding a hole through the middle of the infield to drive in the game-tying runs.

Alex Casals followed with a bunt single, moving pinch-runner, Christine Marte to second base.

After Slowik reached on a fielding error to load the bases, Kennah Orr came on to pinch-hit for Kaye and hit into a fielder's choice to second, forcing Marte out at home.

The next hitter, Krystal Garcia, drove in the eventual game-winning runs on a fielding error by the first baseman, plating Slowik and Casals to make the score, 4-2.

Starter Corinne Jenkins improved to 6-1 on the season, tossing her third complete game. Jenkins allowed seven hits, two runs (both earned), walked a batter and struck out
eight Cardinals.

FIU will next host Eastern Michigan in a doubleheader on Wednesday night, set to start at 5 p.m.

Wednesday night is Softball Hangout with the FIU Tennis team. All fans in attendance will receive an FIU Tennis poster signed by the tennis team and the first 50 fans will
