FIU Downs Florida Atlantic on Senior Day

MIAMI (April 10, 2013) – The FIU women's tennis team (3-15) defeated the Florida Atlantic Owls (8-9), 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the FIU Tennis Courts.

Prior to the match, seniors Rita Maisak and Magali Holt were honored as they took part in the final home match of their FIU careers.

The Panthers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, winning the doubles portion of the match. At No. 1, the pair of Maisak and freshman Aleksandra Trifunovic defeated FAU's Natasha Phillips and Natasha Basma, 8-2. The Owls tied doubles play with an 8-2 win by Taylor Briggs and Marlene Ryan over Holt and freshman Michelle Sabado at the No. 3 position. FIU clinched the doubles points with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 by freshman Carlotta Orlando and junior Giulietta Boha over the duo of Stephanie Cardullo and Catalina Ene.

FIU picked up three-straight points in singles play as Trifunovic defeated Basma, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3, Maisak downed Ryan, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2, and Boha defeated Cardullo, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 4. The three points by the Panthers, clinched the match, giving FIU a 4-0 edge.

FAU got on the board as Holt fell to Natalia Tomaszewicz, 6-1, 6-1, at No 5. Orlando earned her 10th singles win of the season, defeating Ene, 6-3, 6-2, at No.1, while Sabado dropped a 6-3, 7-6 (4) decision to Phillips at No. 6

FIU will next travel to Lafayette, La., to take part in the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Tournament, April 18-21. Seedings for this year's tournament will be released by the league office next week. Fans are encouraged to check back with FIUSports.com for updated tournament information.
