Box Score MIAMI (April 14, 2013) – The FIU Panthers (26-21, 9-8 SBC) fell to Troy (19-23, 7-7 SBC) by a final score of 5-4 on Sunday at the FIU Softball Complex.
The Panthers scored first in the bottom of the opening inning.
Amber Curry led off with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout.
Brie Rojas singled, driving in Curry from third to put FIU on the board, 1-0.
FIU increased its lead to 2-0 on a sacrifice fly to right field by
Jessy Alfonso, plating
Krystal Garcia who walked, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout.
Troy knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the third. A sacrifice fly by Kacie McAllister scored Bailey Blake to put the Trojans on the board. Troy punched in the tying run on the ensuing at-bat courtesy of an RBI single by Caitlin Ortiz past second base, knocking out FIU starter
Shelbie Wagnon.
In the bottom of the frame,
Shelby Graves (3-for-4 on the day) singled home Curry, who led off with a walk and advanced to third on a pair of ground outs.
The Trojans evened the score at 3-3 in the fifth off reliever
Corinne Jenkins (13-6) after
Kayla Burri dropped a fly ball in shallow left center with the bases loaded and one out.
One inning later, Troy took the lead for good on a pair of RBI singles by McAllister and Chandler Griffin.
The Panthers threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh after Alfonso (3-for-3) doubled home Garcia to bring FIU to within 5-4. However, relief pitcher Michaela Hamilton forced
Aleima Lopez to ground out to end the game.
FIU will next travel to FAU to play the Owls on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
