Troy Tops FIU to Clinch Series, 14-3

Box Score TROY, Ala. (May 4, 2013) – The FIU baseball team (23-23, 11-12) dropped the second game of a three-game set to the Troy Trojans, 14-3, on Saturday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field. The Panthers had just four hits while surrendering 15 to the Trojans.

Sophomore Oscar Aguirre slugged his fourth homerun of the season and second of the series in the loss. Troy's Shane McCain threw seven innings of three-run ball and struck out a career-high 11 batters. Troy has now won 15-straight at its home field.

Troy struck first with a three-spot in the first inning. The Trojans' first two hitters reached base and would eventually score on an RBI double by Trae Santos and an RBI single by Josh McDorman. The Trojans also added an additional run on an RBI groundout to take a 3-0 advantage after one.

The Panthers answered back in the second inning. Freshman Edwin Rios led off with a walk and advanced to second on a junior Josh Anderson walk. Aguirre singled to load the bases and Rios went on to score via a wild pitch. Troy however would tack on another run in the second and third inning to up its lead to 5-1.

FIU cut the Trojan lead down to two on Aguirre's homerun. Rios led off the inning with his second walk of the game. The Panthers next two hitters would get out, leading to Aguirre's two-run shot over the rightfield fence. Troy had a 5-3 edge.

FIU junior starter Mike Franco held the Trojans scoreless over the next three innings, but Troy put together a two-run seventh and a seven-run eighth to increase its lead to 14-3.

FIU and Troy will close out the three-game set tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET. The Panthers return to the FIU Baseball Stadium on Tuesday as it hosts Jacksonville in the first of a two-game set. Tuesday's game is slated for a 6 p.m. start while Wednesday's first pitch will be at 3 p.m.
